When Tyler Curtis decided to use a SpreadStone™ Mineral Select Countertop Kit in his kitchen, he didn’t have much confidence in the process. However, because it was an inexpensive solution for fixing his damaged countertops, he decided to give it a try.
Fast forward almost a year and the Colorado homeowner is now singing the praises of the all-inclusive countertop kit. Plus, his workmanship on the project was so good that he won a Runner-Up Prize in the manufacturer’s national “Show Us Our Countertops” Contest.
“We are very pleased with the final results,” says Curtis. “The contrasting colors of the stones and texture in the Volcanic Black created depth against the dark background. This complements the cabinets and wall color, providing us with a good-looking kitchen. All at a very low cost of $144 for a countertop kit. And, by reusing the old Formica® countertops instead of replacing them, the project was both economically and environmentally friendly!”

From Skeptic to Believer
Curtis launched his countertop solutions search in 2023, when he and his wife could no longer stand the heat- and water-damaged areas of the surfaces in their kitchen. They investigated granite, quartz and Formica replacements, but found them cost prohibitive. Looking for an alternative, they discovered Daich Coatings products.
“I had never heard of re-surfacing Formica countertops and was fairly skeptical of the outcome,” says Curtis. “However, the product didn’t cost much, and I’m a DIYer, so I thought we’d give it a try.

“I was surprised at the ease of the entire process coupled with the accuracy of the written instructions and instructional videos. Especially in preparing repairs to the countertop. Cutting out the badly damaged sections and filling them was something I was uncertain about. But I have drywall patching experience, so I was willing to try.”
The SpreadStone product is installed in three timed-out steps and covers up to 40 sq. feet of space. Kits include a base coat, stone coat, clear coat, roller handle, rollers, paint brush and mini roller tray. The real stone product is heat resistant and water repellent, has low VOCs and is food safe.
What Curtis discovered was that by closely following the directions and referring back to the video tutorials, he was able to easily obtain his desired results. He even had enough product available to cover two additional small countertops in the hallway and a coffee bar area.

Final Results
“Friends and family are both astounded and impressed with the results,” says Curtis. “They’re surprised that the SpreadStone is a ‘paint-on’ rock surface. And, after many months of day-to-day kitchen life, the durable finishes are taking kitchen life in stride.
“As one of the busiest rooms in the house, the countertops are performing above expectations! Overall, SpreadStone has made the counters a captivating focal point in the kitchen and given us durability at a low cost. There’s no need to search for another solution if you’re looking for a countertop solution … this one does the trick!”
