Transforming Ugly, Old Kitchen Countertops into Drop-Dead Gorgeous Showpieces

Imagine inheriting a 1962 home that had never been renovated. Where do you start to make your mark? If you’re Stacey Cidlevicz, you start in the kitchen. And, you start with the countertops.

“The original countertops were 58 years old,” says Cidlevicz, a resident of Virginia Beach, Va. “They were lifting at the seams, chipping and peeling. The high cost of a brand new countertop would not fit our budget, so I started researching options online. That’s when I found the Daich Coatings SpreadStone Mineral Select Countertop Refinishing Kit.”

Easy Kit

Cidlevicz watched the how-to videos online, read reviews and decided to tackle the DIY project. In one weekend she turned her countertops from ugly to exceptional.

“The kit was easy to use and came with everything needed to apply each coat,” says Cidlevicz. “We chose the Volcanic Black color to truly change the look of the kitchen. This was a true transformation that took place right before our eyes.

“To preserve the beauty, we applied the epoxy coating to the finished countertops. Then we started other changes and upgrades in the kitchen. Now it’s one of my favorite rooms in the house!”

Fast Transformations

Kristina Bomberger understands the frustration of having an old, ugly kitchen countertop. Hers were from the early 1990s. She had Formica countertops covered with stick-on paper.

“I have children at home plus parents and everyone is always using the kitchen,” says Bomberger, a resident of Bend, Ore. “The video instructions for the countertop kit made it very easy to know exactly what I needed to do and when. This was a simple DIY project with big results. The Natural White countertop just sparkles!”

Now that Bomberger has successfully tackled her kitchen countertops, she’s on to other remodeling challenges. “I’m looking at the Daich stone coatings for other surfaces throughout my home,” says Bomberger. “This is fairly addictive. You see great results very quickly and can truly transform different parts of the home!”

Real Roll-On Stone Coatings

SpreadStone is a dynamic multi-colored decorative stone finish that provides shimmering mineral accents and color highlights found in natural mined rock. The coating system has outstanding resistance to hot pans, stains, abrasion, impact and household cleaners, making it ideal for the general wear and tear common with busy kitchens and other areas of the home.

The proprietary stone technology used in the SpreadStone kit allows homeowners to make easy — and cost effective — upgrades to surfaces like bartops, tables, vanities and countertops. The kit comes in 10 decorative colors and sells for $125 online. Each kit covers up to 40 square feet of surfaces space.

Application of the product can be done in three simple steps — a stone base coat, a decorative stone coat and a stone clear top coat. The coatings create a lasting and elegant new upgrade for any room. The finishes are essentially odorless and come pre-mixed and ready to apply immediately, with no harsh chemicals.

Weekend Transformations

Sherry Jacobson and Rania Abdulla are true Daich Coatings “Weekend Warriors.” They each used our SpreadStone Mineral Select Countertop Refinishing Kit to transform part of their homes in just one weekend.

For Sherry, the change came in her kitchen. But for Rania, her project was tackling a dining room table top!

Sherry’s Kitchen

Although her countertops were installed in 2018, Sherry Jacobson never liked them. In fact, she hated the brown color that they chose. At the time it matched her home interior. But, over the last few years, Sherry’s house has undergone some transformations. Like many people, she’s moved to a rustic farmhouse look with a focus more on gray tones.

“I took a leap of faith and purchased the Daich Coatings countertop kit on The Home Depot website,” says Sherry, a resident of Janesville, Wisc. “I chose the Onyx Fog color to brighten up the kitchen and complement the gray tones we now have throughout our house.”

Since Sherry and her family were “sheltering in place” during the COVID-19 restrictions, she decided to jump right into the project.

“I started the countertop project late Friday evening and it was fully completed by Sunday!” says Sherry. “On a scale of 1 to 10, this was so easy it’s a 1. If you know how to use a paint brush and a roller, and can sand and follow instructions, this becomes an unbelievably easy experience.

“I completed this project all by myself. And I’m proud of making this transformation take place in our kitchen!”

Rania’s Dining Room Table

Rania Abdulla is into “upcycling” — using reclaimed items and making them work better for her home. As a blogger, she’s had lots of experience in this category. However, she’d never worked with our Daich Coatings products before.

While she originally wanted to apply the real stone coating to her bathroom countertop, inspiration struck. She needed to solve a dilemma on how to get a new upscale look for her old dining room tabletop. That’s when Rania made the decision to give our Natural White coating a try.

“My 13-year-old IKEA table that was pretty beat up,” says Rania. “This table had been ‘transformed’ several times over the years and was ready for upcycling.”

Following all the instructions provided with the kit, she and her husband created an online blog tutorial of the transformation. The project proved easy, and the new tabletop gleams in their dining room.

The Canadian blogger now has the table she dreamed of, and can count herself as a “Weekend Warrior” with our Daich Coatings kit!

Easy DIY Countertop Transformation

If you think tackling new countertops as a DIY project is too hard for you, think again. Take it from influencer Michelle Felux with Breaking Down the Box. She was surprised at how easy it was to transform her countertops with our SpreadStoneMineral Select Countertop Refinishing Kit.

“I expected the application would be a lot more challenging than it was,” says Felux. “When I actually started tackling this project, it was really easy to achieve the look I was going for!”

The “look” she wanted was to transform her old Formica countertops into true accents for her refurbished kitchen. Out of the 10 colors available, Felux selected the Natural White stone color. The SpreadStone is a dynamic multi-colored decorative stone finish that provides mineral accents and color highlights found in natural mined rock. So, along with the white base, Felux now has real stone accents in her countertop.

“On a DIY scale, I’d say this is a ‘1 or 2’ for the entire project,” says Felux. “It was really very easy. I love the shimmering mineral accents that stand out and make this countertop so unique. This product immediately changed the look of my kitchen.”

Standing Up to Family Life

For Felux, who wrote about the project in her blog, it wasn’t just about getting a new look for her countertops. It was about getting a surface that could stand up to the constant demands of family life.

“I have a toddler,” says Felux. “Sometimes she is not the nicest with our kitchen counters. However, the countertops have not chipped or warped in any way during the past few months. The Daich Coatings surface is holding up really well — to heat, liquids, stains and rough treatment!”

Easy Steps

Because Felux has a full house, she decided not to take her entire kitchen out of commission to do the project in one weekend. Instead, she tackled half one weekend, allowing the family to use the other half. Then she switched the next weekend.

Application of the product can be done in three simple steps — a stone base coat, a decorative stone coat and a stone clear top coat. The coatings create a lasting and elegant new upgrade for any room. As a bonus, the cost effectiveness of the product (priced at $125 or less on our website) makes it easy and inexpensive to change the color whenever you like to suit changes in your home’s decor in the future.

Tips from Felux

“Having some counter space available for our on-the-go family to still be able to use was critical for us,” says Felux. “In a household that’s less active, the entire project could definitely be tackled in one weekend.”

One final tip from Felux: wear a respirator when you sand the surface during the prep stage. “The dust masks do an OK job,” says Felux. “However, a respirator gives you the best fit and cleanest breathing air for the fine dust. Otherwise, you’ve got everything you need in the kit to easily transform your countertop!”

DIY Garage Floor Makeover with DaiHard® 100 Industrial Strength Epoxy Floor Coating

Are you ready to say farewell to your stained, discolored and simply ugly concrete floors? Whether in your basement, garage or workshop, applying industrial-strength DiaHard® 100 Industrial Strength Epoxy Floor Coating can refresh and rejuvenate concrete surfaces in your home.

DaiHard 100 is a significant departure from water-based epoxy floor coatings which have been widely sold through retail stores for the past 15 years. Unlike weaker water-based epoxies, DaiHard is a “100% solids” epoxy formula that withstands heavy-duty forklift traffic — but at a cost similar to common water-based offerings.

Covering Concrete

Available in gray or tan, the roll-on floor coating can easily be tackled as a DIY project. Once applied to a clean surface — using a standard paint roller or squeegee applicator — the industrial strength epoxy coating locks onto interior concrete floors with exceptional adhesion capabilities.

“Just one coat of DaiHard 100 hides anything previously on a concrete surface,” says Peter Daich, president of Daich Coatings. “Your new DaiHard surface is impact- and abrasion-resistant. It also resists salt and chemicals. And, there is no hot-tire pickup, so there are no worries about driving on the surface.

“We continually see homeowners using this epoxy floor coating in different locations throughout the home. If there’s an ugly, marked-up concrete floor, this is the solution.”

One Kit Does It All

The DaiHard 100 kit (which is cost effectively priced below $90 on the Daich Coatings website and through The Home Depot) includes a cleaner to loosen dirt on the floor before applying the epoxy. The kit also includes 2.7 quarts of DaiHard epoxy resin (part A of the formula) plus one quart of DaiHard epoxy hardener (part B of the formula). The two parts are combined and then applied to the surface with either a roller or squeegee application. One roller-applied coat generally covers an area of 250 square feet.

To add to the overall appearance of the finished floor coating, the kit also includes decorative vinyl flakes that may be sprinkled onto the wet surface. A light and uniform layer of the broadcasted flakes creates a slip-resistant floor. If desired, a second layer of the coating can also be applied over the flakes the following day for a high-gloss showroom finish, providing even more durability.

“DaiHard protects against oil stains, chemicals, salt and general wear and tear that concrete floor surfaces routinely receive in your home setting,” says Daich. “For less than $90 you can transform your interior concrete floors with this durable and long-lasting product.”

The low-odor, zero VOC epoxy delivers professional-grade, heavy-duty performance on all types of concrete surfaces, including utility and laundry rooms, garages and cellars. An installation video makes it easy to transform your concrete floors.

Can’t Get Enough of SpreadStone™ Finishes

They’re at it again! Recently we shared with you how Cynthia and Dan had created their beautiful driveway surface with our SpreadStone Decorative Concrete Resurfacing Kits.

Now they’ve taken it a step further and moved indoors!

Stepping Inside

The DIY duo didn’t stop with their driveway and walkway. A few weeks later they decided to tackle the interior of their two-car garage and a side access room.

“We were so impressed with the SpreadStone product outside, that we decided to bring it indoors,” says Cynthia. “We used the same Cold Gold Slate coloring but we reversed our pattern from the outside. This time we did the base coat, then the light gray coating. We added diamond shapes down the center during the last coat.”

The couple decided to finish their handiwork off with three coats of clear finish. Then, like outdoors, they added personal touches by hand painting sea animals on the steps.

“We love our new garage floor,” says Cynthia. “The SpreadStone product was very easy to work with and provided us with tremendous results. In just five days our garage area was beautifully transformed!”

Cynthia’s Tips:

  • For an overall project like this, do the garage floor first. This way you can power pressure the garage floor before the driveway so that you don’t put the cleaner on your new driveway surface.
  • If you have steps in your garage, plan to do those with a paint brush.
  • Go back and revisit the online directions repeatedly to keep you on track.
  • Be creative. We reversed colors in different rooms to give each space its own unique look.
  • We may have overdone it with the clear finish coat, but we really like the look it gave to the garage floor.

Finding Joy in Bathroom DIY Projects

What brings you joy? We know that for many people, bathroom upgrade projects bring them joy. How do we know that? Because the 2019 Remodeling Impact Report tells us so.

In October of 2019, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) and the National Association of Realtors® (NAR) worked together on the 2019 Remodeling Impact Report. The study analyzes 20 different types of remodeling projects based on feedback from homeowners regarding their “joy factor.” It also surveys Realtors® with respect to cost recovery for a project at resale, and from NARI members regarding remodeling project fees.

Survey Says …

When reporting on bathroom remodeling projects — like those you can achieve with Daich Coatings products — homeowners reported an overall 9.3 Joy Score. Of the homeowners surveyed, 80% felt a major sense of accomplishment and 70% have a greater desire to be in their home after the project was finished.

And, here is the #1 reason people decided to make changes to their bathrooms: “to upgrade worn-out surfaces, finishes and materials.”

Spreading Joy

If you’re ready to invest time in your own bathroom makeover, let us help. We have a variety of easy DIY kits you can use to transform your bathroom to make it joyful for you and your family.

Chase Away Inside Blues with Interior Wall and Tile Refinishing Projects

Bored with your interior walls? Say farewell to ugly tiles and worn-out wallpaper.

Keep busy while at home with an easy DIY project that transforms your interior walls. At Daich Coatings we offer two different ways to enhance your interior walls with a wide variety of finish options.

Read on to discover how you can:

  1. Use textured brushes to make your walls look like smooth polished marble, natural suede, parchment, dream lace or linen.
  2. Roll on a premium stone or porcelain finish right over existing tiles in a shower, countertop or kitchen backsplash.

Rolling on Wall Finishes

VertiStone® Roll-On Wall Texture uses a unique stone coating technology that adds natural textured beauty to your walls in just minutes. Without mixing, prep work or multi-step labor-intensive processes, VertiStone quickly transforms a room.

Use decorative textured brushes to get different finishes. You can make your walls look like smooth polished marble, natural suede, parchment, dream lace or linen!

“Textured magic happens on walls so easily when using VertiStone,” says Peter Daich, president of Daich Coatings. “This is a DIY dream project. Just pop the lid from the can and roll on beautiful walls.”

Outstanding Colors

VertiStone tints to thousands of colors and can be applied directly onto drywall, block, masonry and concrete surfaces. Designed for both interior and exterior use, the fast-drying finish features extremely low VOCs and is odorless. The breathable finish does not encourage mold and mildew, so it can be used in high humidity areas of the home, such as bathrooms and kitchens.

“One of the most unique ways to use VertiStone is to tape off different sections of a wall in a grid pattern,” says Daich. “Then, once the finish is applied and dries, simply remove the tape. You’ll immediately have the effect of real tile.”

Covering Up Old Tile

If you’re looking to cover up tile that’s already in place, SpreadStone Wall Tile Refinishing Kit can handle the job.

“Sometimes the look of a tile gets old and dull,” says Daich. “Other times the grout is stained or you just want a change.

“This DIY kit project is fast and easy. It can be done on tiles in bathrooms and shower areas, on a kitchen backsplash, as an accent wall tile or even on decorative columns.”

All-in-One Kit

The SpreadStone kit includes everything you need to roll on a premium stone or porcelain finish. Starting with a bond coat and stone coating, the existing tile surface is completely covered. A stone accent coat is then applied with a textured roller. Following that, a stone highlight coat is applied. Finally, a stone clear coat is added to seal the finish.

Your new SpreadStone surface on the tiles is hard and durable. It also provides a waterproof barrier. The coatings resist cleaning chemicals, mold and mildew for long-term beauty. All the water-based products are odorless with fast drying times and come in 20 different colors.

“The SpreadStone pre-mixed formula makes it easy to tackle this project like a professional,” says Daich. “By following a few easy steps you can quickly say farewell to dirty grout lines and old-fashioned tiles in just a weekend. And, best of all, this kit is just a fraction of the price that you’d pay to replace your old tiles!”

Kitchen Transformation Led by SpreadStone Mineral Select Countertop Kit

A kitchen renovation for just $700? It can be done … just ask Ben Coles.

Ben and his wife redid their walls, cabinets and countertops for $500. Now they have the look and feel of a new kitchen. The Coles began by painting their natural oak cabinets a dark grey. Then they changed their walls from beige with natural oak trim to white walls and white trim with some light grey accents.

The next part of the project involved applying the economically-priced SpreadStone Mineral Select Countertop Refurbishing Kit.

Selecting SpreadStone Mineral Select

The SpreadStone Mineral Select kit comes in 10 decorative colors: Onyx Fog, Oyster, Canyon Gold, Mantle Stone, Natural White, Coriander Cream, Sundance, Volcanic Black, Iron Stone and Lodestone.  Each cost-effective kit (available for $125) includes application tools and required coatings to complete 30 to 40 square feet of space. The three-step process includes applications of a stone base coat, decorative stone coat and stone clear top coat.

The product is odorless and safe-to-use in the home. Pre-mixed and ready to apply immediately, this is not a faux surface. It’s not plastic-looking and it has no harsh chemicals. The kit provides the fastest, most economical way to completely renew a countertop with a real stone surface.

The finished SpreadStone Mineral Select countertops resist heat, stains, abrasion, impact and household cleaners. Adding the ultimate touch of elegance to a room, SpreadStone Mineral Select provides a natural design sophistication to the home.

Ben’s Kitchen

“We had three surfaces to do,” says Coles, a Canadian resident. “There was the island and desk area that were in green Melamine. Then the kitchen sink was a standard white pressboard.

“I researched countertops on the Internet and the pricing was crazy — in the thousands. Some DIY kits looked nice, but were expensive. Others seemed like you’d need lots of skill and looked messy. Another involved creating a textured look with a sponge … I felt it looked very cheap. Then I saw the YouTube video for SpreadStone and it looked very easy to do with little mess at a good price.”

Once they received the SpreadStone kit, the Coles took their time with the project. After taping off all the surfaces, they applied two coats of primer. Once that cured, they applied the two stone coats and attacked the sanding. Next came the two clear coat layers, and some touch ups.

“I found the entire process was very easy to do,” says Coles. “It didn’t take any special skills at all. My wife and I are very impressed with the SpreadStone kit. The countertops look great and the Daich Coatings kit saved us thousands of dollars!”

Ben’s Tips:

  • Be gentle with the sanding. Try to use a palm sander with 120 grit sandpaper.
  • Pay extra attention to the instructions on how to do the edges of the countertop. Roll the top surface down over the edge. Only sand the edges by hand, not with the palm sander.
  • Watch the YouTube video. Seeing the steps really helps master the DIY kit.

Anti-Slip RollerRock Ideal for Indoor Pool Deck

Even when it’s cold and snowy outside, it’s warm and inviting at The Inn at Scituate Harbor. Located on the Atlantic Coast in Massachusetts, the inn includes 29 comfortable rooms, each one with a harbor view.

When the weather is too cold to go outside, many guests enjoy the indoor heated pool that’s available year-round for the inn’s guests and local parties. To make the pool area as attractive and safe as possible, the inn’s owners added Daich Coating’s RollerRock and DiaHard100 Epoxy Clear Coat to the deck surface.

Problem/Solution

“Our indoor pool deck was a mess,” says Lynda Ferguson, general manager and co-owner of The Inn at Scituate Harbor. “It was cement and painted or covered with several different things over the years — but nothing would stick.

“In 2017 we decided to try the RollerRock product and it was awesome! This product looks great, it’s stayed down perfectly for several years and has also added a level of safety to our indoor pool deck.”

RollerRock Concrete Surface Covering

Made with real stone, RollerRock is not a paint. It’s a high-performance coating made of stone. Successfully installed on millions of feet of exterior concrete since 2005, RollerRock is applied with just a roller and brush. Available in 15 colors, the surface has a clean, speckled stone appearance.

Because of the stone texture of RollerRock, the product has delivered an anti-slip score of 0.093 — almost twice the OSHA recommended standard. That anti-slip aspect helps a great deal for guest usage of the indoor pool at The Inn at Scituate Harbor — and with the pool parties hosted there for local children.

RollerRock has endured so beautifully in the high humidity of the indoor pool area at The Inn at Scituate Harbor because it resists water, salt, chemicals, mold, mildew, impact and abrasions. The product can also be used on outdoor pool decks and concrete surfaces because it resists UV rays, hot tire pickup, and freeze/thaw conditions.

DiaHard Epoxy Clear Coat Sealant

To seal the RollerRock on the indoor pool deck surface, the team at The Inn at Scituate Harbor used DiaHard 100 Epoxy Clear Coat. The low-odor, zero-VOC formula provided a strong sealant that is salt and chemical resistant.

DaiHard100 Epoxy Clear Coat delivers heavy-duty, industrial strength epoxy durability, wear-resistant beauty and easy maintenance. The self-priming formula has a specially-modified two-part “100% solids” epoxy chemistry that has been proven for years on automotive, commercial and industrial floor surfaces. The “clear shield” of the finish added strength to the pool deck surface that receives daily use.

Long-Term Results

“We’re really pleased with the long-term benefits of RollerRock,” says Ferguson. “We get a lot of positive comments on it from our guests.

“Another aspect that was great about this project was working with the staff at Daich Coatings. They were incredible. They offered us so much helpful information and they were extremely patient with us. This is a product and a company we would definitely use again.”
